Air Fryer Cinnamon Baked Apples with Oat Crumble

Baked apples are a simple dessert that tastes like a warm crumble without any dough. Here the apples are cored, stuffed with an oat, nut and cinnamon filling, and cooked in the air fryer in about twenty-five minutes instead of an hour in the oven. The apples go soft and juicy while the top turns crisp. Serve them warm with plain yogurt, custard or ice cream, or eat one for breakfast.

Instructions

  1. Cut a thin slice from the bottom of each apple so it stands upright. Use a corer or small spoon to remove the core, keeping the base intact and leaving a hole about 3 cm (1 1/4 inches) wide.
  2. Score a shallow line around the middle of each apple. This stops the skin from splitting as the apples soften.
  3. Mix the oats, nuts, raisins, sugar, cinnamon and salt in a bowl. Add half the butter and rub it in with your fingertips until the mixture clumps.
  4. Pack the filling into the apples, mounding it on top. Dot the remaining butter over the tops.
  5. Stand the apples in a small heatproof dish or 18 cm (7 inch) cake pan that fits your basket and pour the water around them.
  6. Heat the air fryer to 180°C (350°F) for 3 minutes. Lower the dish in and cook for 22 to 25 minutes, until the apples are tender when pierced and the topping is golden.
  7. Rest the apples for 5 minutes, then spoon the juices over them and serve warm.

Tips

  • Use apples that hold their shape, such as Braeburn, Gala or Granny Smith types. Soft varieties can collapse into sauce.
  • Check the topping after 15 minutes. If it browns too quickly, cover the apples loosely with a small piece of foil.

Questions and answers

Why do I need water in the dish?

The water makes steam that helps the apples soften evenly and keeps the sugary juices from burning on the dish.

Can I make baked apples ahead?

Yes. Cook them up to a day ahead, refrigerate, and warm them in the air fryer at 160°C (325°F) for 5 to 6 minutes before serving.

Can I make this dairy-free?

Yes. Replace the butter with coconut oil or a plant-based butter in the same amount.
