Chocolate Avocado Smoothie

Avocado sounds odd in a chocolate drink until you taste it. Its mild, buttery flesh makes the smoothie as thick as a milkshake, and you cannot pick out the flavor behind the cocoa. The banana and maple syrup supply the sweetness, so no white sugar is needed. The recipe leans on healthy fats for a drink that feels like dessert but works as a filling afternoon snack.

Instructions

  1. Peel and slice the banana and freeze the slices for at least 2 hours, or overnight.
  2. Halve the avocado, remove the pit and scoop out the flesh. It should be soft and green, with no brown patches.
  3. Put the almond milk, cocoa powder, maple syrup, vanilla and salt in the blender and blend for 10 seconds. This dissolves the cocoa so it does not clump.
  4. Add the avocado, frozen banana and ice cubes.
  5. Blend on high for 60 seconds until completely smooth and as thick as a milkshake.
  6. Taste, and add a teaspoon more maple syrup or a splash of almond milk to adjust. Pour into two glasses and serve at once.

Tips

  • A slightly underripe avocado can leave tiny flecks. Press it to check: it should give gently, like a ripe pear.
  • Use soy milk instead of almond milk for more protein, or add a spoonful of peanut butter for a chocolate peanut version.

Questions and answers

Does a chocolate avocado smoothie taste like avocado?

Very little. The cocoa and banana cover the mild flavor, and the avocado mostly adds creaminess. Skeptical kids and adults rarely notice it.

Can I make it ahead?

It keeps in a sealed, full jar in the fridge for up to 24 hours. The cocoa hides browning, but the texture thickens, so loosen it with a splash of milk.

Can I freeze the leftovers?

Yes. Freeze in ice cube trays for up to 2 months, then blend the cubes with a little milk for a thick, soft-serve style drink.
