Blueberries are one of the easiest fruits to blend, because their thin skins break down completely. Frozen ones make the drink cold and thick, and yogurt turns the tartness into something creamy. Vanilla and a spoonful of honey round it off. It suits a school morning or a post-workout snack, and it stays thick and cold for a few minutes after blending.
Instructions
- Pour the milk into the blender, then add the yogurt, vanilla and honey.
- Add the frozen blueberries and the chia seeds, if using.
- Blend on low for 15 seconds to break up the berries, then on high for 45 seconds until the smoothie is completely smooth.
- Check the thickness. For a thinner drink add milk 2 tablespoons at a time and blend for 10 seconds more.
- Taste and add a little more honey if the blueberries were tart.
- Pour into two glasses and serve at once.
Tips
- Wild blueberries are smaller and more intense. If you use them, the smoothie turns out darker and a little more tart, so add extra honey.
- Chia seeds thicken the drink as it stands. Skip them if you plan to drink it straight away and prefer a thin texture.
Questions and answers
Can I use fresh blueberries instead of frozen?
Yes. Use the same weight and add 6 ice cubes so the smoothie is cold and thick. Blend a little longer to break down the ice.
Can I make this smoothie dairy-free?
Use coconut or soy yogurt and a plant milk of your choice. Replace the honey with maple syrup if you also want it vegan.
Why did my smoothie turn gray-purple?
Blueberry pigments shift color with acidity and with the other ingredients. Yogurt and milk push it toward a dusty purple, and a squeeze of lemon brings back a brighter shade.
